A Digital Replication of the seizure experience

Stimulation Simulation aims to create an understanding of the seizure experience for any individual. It is a project that began in 2013 as part of a university assessment and soon eventuated into something much bigger. In 2014, it evolved from an 'artwork' to an 'understanding' as it took on the conceptual foundations of replication and aimed to recreate an experience. This replication of an experience is portrayed through sound and video, in the form of a multimedia installation.

Consciousness manipulation is the core of the project, as that is what happens when a seizure occurs. To recreate the experience of a seizure, a specific sound composition was made that purposely put the audience out of their comfort zone. This composition is played in a sound proof booth, through 6 speakers that surround the audience, encapsulating them in an altered state of human awareness. Different sounds are played through different speakers giving the effect that the sounds are bouncing around the audience.

In 2015, Packshaw completed an Honours degree that focused on this subject. Two videos have been designed and developed to replicate the journey of a seizure. One video is very abstract and is open for interpretation. The other video is rather linear and puts the audience in a seizure scenario through an epileptic's eyes. Though the video aspect can be interesting and potentially disorientating, it is the sound composition that recreates a majority of the experience. The project is most successful when the sound and video are presented separately, with the composition on loop in the darkness of the sound proof booth and the video displayed on a wall outside.

In 2016, the project took on a new form through Virtual Reality. The recreation of the experience as a VR project manipulated a person's consciousness from an internal angle rather than an external angle to truly create a first-person understanding of the feelings experienced by an epileptic during their seizure. Stimulation Simulation VR is still in early developments and has a long way to evolve and change with the times. 

 In 2017, Stimulation Simulation VR is being remade, both visually and audibly. The sound composition aims to be remade in 3D space and the virtual reality experience will be altered. Stimulation Simulation VR is still in early developments and has a long way to evolve and change with the times.
